00:00-02:57...John Doe - Ready
John Doe is one of the original members of the Los Angeles punk band X. This song was actually supposed to be an X song but it never happend. This is from one of John Doe's solo albums, and if the female voice in the back sounds familiar, that's because it's Kristin Hersh! Haunting, eh? I actually read a review of this album that said Kristin's voice sounds better with his than Exene Cervenka, who was actually in X.
02:58-07:37...The Need - Jacky the Ripper
Queercore doesn't get any crazier than this. Radio Sloan and Rachel Carns made two albums as The Need before they disbanded, but those two albums were amazing. This song is from their self-titled debut. There's something so strangely sexy about their music, I can't even describe it. I think you have to listen to a whole album through to really get it, but maybe you can sort of get the idea here... "I come to get you in my sleep (Jackie O, O lantern) Or am I coming in my sleep?" What the fuck does it mean? Who knows, but it drips with sex. I love it. "Roll the brain in salt and wrap the heart in paper."
07:38-10:42...Frente! - Jungle
This is a darkly happy little song that I have really been loving the past year. "This is my jungle!" Angie Hart declares happily, "There's no room for you!" Complete with a joyous little flute solo and Angie's fluttery voice, loneliness and isolation has never felt so good. If you enjoy this song, you should definitely look into more Frente! because they are way too much fun. Angie and her husband later started a band called Splendid that is a little cheesy, but still nice at times.
10:43-13:46...Sublime - 40 Oz to Freedom
I don't know what came over me. Perhaps it was Alice's livejournal entry about this band. I miss them, and the memories they bring back. At any rate, this is one of my favorite Sublime songs. "A 40oz to freedom is the only chance I have to feel good even though I feel bad." Truer words were never said. This song is from the album of the same name, which is pretty damn great.
13:47-18:06...Tori Amos - Doughnut Song
I don't know what possessed me to choose this song. I really like the lyrics though. I always feel a little silly when I first put on a Tori Amos CD but I shouldn't feel that way because she's very talented and I always remember why I like her when I get into the first song. Anyway, if you are a non-believer, you should try giving her another chance. This song is from Boys for Pele which is definitely my favorite of her albums. It's her post-miscarriage album and is supposed to be her "most difficult" but I couldn't really say what that means. It's always the one I tell people to listen to when they're trying to get into her. So go for it.
18:07-24:03...!!! - Pardon My Freedom
I put this one on the end because it's a bit long, and you can just turn it off if you don't like it. But !!! (pronounced chik-chik-chik) is great dance fun! So crank it up and get your ass out of your chair. This song is from the 2004 album Louden Up Now. "Like I give a fuck! Like I give a shit about that fuck!"
